‘Truth Matters – Week 4’ – 4.6.2025

THEN YOU WILL KNOW THE TRUTH, AND THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE.

31 Jesus said to the people who believed him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  33 “But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said. “We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?”  34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. 35 A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is a part of the family forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. 37 Yes, I realize that you are descendants of Abraham. And yet some of you are trying to kill me because there’s no room in your hearts for my message. 38 I am telling you what I saw when I was with my Father. But you are following the advice of your father.” 39 “Our father is Abraham!” they declared. ”No,” Jesus replied, “for if you were really the children of Abraham, you would follow his example. 40 Instead, you are trying to kill me because I told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing. 41 No, you are imitating your real father.” 42 Jesus told them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me. 43 Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It’s because you can’t even hear me! 44 For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. 45 So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me! 46 Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin? And since I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God.”  John 8:31-47 NLT

WHAT ARE SOME TRUTHS THAT JESUS TAUGHT?

  • God is a loving father filled with compassion and mercy. (Psalm 145:8)
  • God is a just judge. (Psalm 7:11)
  • Our need for redemption. (Ephesians 1:7)
  • Eternal life is only through faith in Jesus. (John 14:6)
  • Salvation is by grace through faith. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
  • Salvation is for everyone. (John 3:16, 5:24)
  • Jesus is the son of God. (Luke 1:35, John 1:14)
  • Jesus went to the cross to die for our sins. (1 Peter 2:24)
  • Jesus rose from the dead. (Matthew 28:6)
  • Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. (John 14:6)

PEOPLE WILL SPEND AN ETERNITY IN ONE OF TWO PLACES, HEAVEN OR HELL.

31 Jesus said to the people who believed him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  John 8:31-32 NLT

  • If you hold to my teaching.
  • If you love God and love people.
  • If you forgive and forgive quickly.
  • If you follow all of it not just parts of it.

24 “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.”  John 5:24 NLT

According to Jesus, hell is a place for those who reject God, who rebel against His kingship, who reject His son, and refuse His grace.

Jesus taught that hell is a real place where those that reject Jesus and his teaching will spend eternity.

Based on Jesus’ teaching, hell is not temporary, but eternal. Those who suffer in hell will suffer forever.

Thankfully, there is one way to escape hell before entering. God offers us reconciliation with Him, so that we never have to experience hell. That reconciliation was made possible through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Through faith in Christ, anyone can be reconciled to God.

16 For this is how God loved the world. He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. 18 There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19 And the judgement is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants. John 3:16-21 NLT
