‘Parables – Week 2’ – 6.14.2026

PARABLE OF THE UNFORGIVING DEBTOR

21 Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?”  22 “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!”  Matthew 18:21-22 NLT

Jesus effectively shattered the idea that forgiveness could be reduced to a checklist or a legal formula. By multiplying Peter’s “perfect” number, Jesus signaled that true kingdom forgiveness is boundless and immeasurable.

  • Chronic means the behavior is habitual, pervasive, and intentional.
  • Incidental means the act is an isolated, accidental, or unavoidable exception in an otherwise compliant process.

They wronged me!

  • In relationships, unforgiveness brings resentment
  • Resentment is like a cancer.

True Repentance can bring restoration.

It starts with honest repentance.

Make right what you did wrong.

Being restored where you were.

God’s Forgiveness

9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9 NLT

12 He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. Psalm 103:12 NLT

25 “I—yes, I alone—will blot out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again.” Isaiah 43:25 NLT

So, how does God’s Word say we should forgive others?

32 “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 NIV

13 “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:13 NIV

14 “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”  Matthew 6:14-15 NIV

  • Forgiveness is a command.
  • Forgiveness is a decision.
  • Forgiveness is a process.
  • Forgiveness allows God to be the judge.

Next Steps:

  1. Ask God to help you forgive.
  2. Pray salvation and blessings on those who you need to forgive.
  3. Let God bring your emotions in line with His will.
