“Fishers of Men” – 06.20.21

 “Fishers of Men” Part 1 – 06.20.21

The First Disciples

18 One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 19 Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” 20 And they left their nets at once and followed him.

21 A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And he called them to come, too. 22 They immediately followed him, leaving the boat and their father behind.  Matthew 4:18-22 NLT

“When we fish for fish we take fish out of a beautiful life into death, but when we fish for men, we take men out of death into a beautiful life with the Lord Jesus.”  Dr. Adrian Rodgers

JESUS CHOSE COMMON ORDINARY PEOPLE.

  • It’s about what Jesus can do in us and through us.
  • It is God’s plan to take ordinary people and to do extraordinary things through them.

The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13 NLT

Too often Dad’s don’t lead because they don’t feel they know enough.

JESUS GAVE US A MISSION/ PURPOSE.

18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 NLT

  • If we are truly followers of Jesus Christ, we are doing what Jesus did.
  • If we are truly followers of Jesus Christ, we are fishers of men.
  • If we claim to follow Christ and don’t share our faith with those that are perishing we’re liars.

The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18 NLT

JESUS SHOWED US HOW TO FISH FOR PEOPLE.

1Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.

When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”

Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.

Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”

Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”  Luke 19:1-10 NLT

  • Jesus saw Zacchaeus.
  • Jesus acknowledged Zacchaeus by name.
  • Jesus spent time with Zacchaeus.
  • Zacchaeus repents and receives salvation.
  • Repentance isn’t negotiating or bargaining with God about how much sin you can keep in your life and still be saved.
  • Repentance is brokenness that changes you.

JESUS CAME FOR ALL OF US.

16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17 NLT

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”  John 14:6 NLT

11 For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’ 12 There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”  Acts 4:11-12 NLT

Next steps for me today…

  • To repent and turn to Jesus for salvation.
  • To commit to share Jesus with the people in my life.
