WHERE IS YOUR TREASURE?
When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, “As you know, Passover begins in two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.” At that same time the leading priests and elders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest, plotting how to capture Jesus secretly and kill him. “But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume and poured it over his head. The disciples were indignant when they saw this. “What a waste!” they said. “It could have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” But Jesus, aware of this, replied, “Why criticize this woman for doing such a good thing to me? You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me. She has poured this perfume on me to prepare my body for burial. I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.” Matthew 26:1-13 NLT
- She expressed pure worship of Jesus.
- She brought her very best.
- She planned this moment.
- She had seen Jesus raise her brother Lazarus to life.
- She understood what Jesus was teaching and believed him.
- She anointed Jesus for burial.
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests and asked, “How much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?” And they gave him thirty pieces of silver. From that time on, Judas began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
Matthew 26:14-16 NLT • Judas sells out Jesus for maybe a month’s wages.
- Judas wanted a messiah, just not a crucified one.
- Judas wanted power and wealth.
- Judas did not understand what Jesus was teaching.
Jesus Teaching about Money and Possessions
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:19-21 NLT
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.” Matthew 6:24 NLT
OUR WORSHIP MATTERS TO GOD
Now Adam had sexual relations with his wife, Eve, and she became pregnant. When she gave birth to Cain, she said, “With the Lord’s help, I have produced a man!” Later she gave birth to his brother and named him Abel. When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain cultivated the ground. When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the Lord. Abel also brought a gift—the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The Lord accepted Abel and his gift, but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected. “Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.” Genesis 4:1-7 NLT
- Cain presented some of his crops.
- Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn lambs.
- Abel brought the first fruits.
It’s not just that we give but it’s why we give, when we give, the attitude with which we give, and the portion we give. God cares about all the details of our lives, and he cares about the details of how we give.
What we see with Mary is total submission to Jesus.
- She sat at his feet and focused on him.
- She brought her best and anointed him.
- She humbled herself and wiped his feet with her hair. • She surrendered everything to Jesus.
