TRUSTING GOD WITH EVERYTHING

DO I REALLY TRUST GOD WITH EVERYTHING?

The Widow’s Offering

41 Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. 43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”  Mark 12:41-44 NLT

THE WIDOW’S OFFERING IS NOT ABOUT GIVING BUT ABOUT TRUST.

  • The widow should have been receiving not giving.
  • Forgetting herself, she wished to testify that she and all that she possessed belonged to God
  • The widow trusted God to provide.
  • The widow put her faith in action.
  • Jesus was moved by her actions.

43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”   Mark 12:43-44 NLT

  • The large gifts were easier.
  • The small gift was sacrificial.

SCRIPTURE MAKES IT CLEAR IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO GIVE.

So I thought I should send these brothers ahead of me to make sure the gift you promised is ready. But I want it to be a willing gift, not one given grudgingly. Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.” 10 For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. 11 Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. 12 So two good things will result from this ministry of giving—the needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God. 2 Corinthians 9:5-12 NLT

  • Today we may have abundance, and tomorrow we may be in want and suffer need. Today we may have the privilege of giving and tomorrow we may have the privilege of receiving.
  • God doesn’t need our money to build His Kingdom.
  • Jesus speaks quite often about money because he knew it would become an idol or a god to many.

17 As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. 19 But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’” 20 “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” 21 Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”  22 At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Mark 10:17-22 NLT

  • The rich young ruler had his trust in his wealth not Jesus.
  • Totally surrender is trusting God with everything.

Next steps for me today…

  • To truly surrender everything to Jesus.
  • To trust God with my life.
  • To trust God with everything.
