‘Pride is a Thief’ – 9.04.2022

PRIDE SETS US UP FOR DESTRUCTION.
Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall. Proverbs 16:18 NLT

GOD HATES PRIDE.
All who fear the Lord will hate evil. Therefore, I hate pride and arrogance, corruption and perverse speech. Proverbs 8:13 NLT

PRIDE POISONS OUR MIND AND HEART.

PRIDE IS SATANIC.
• It’s his most effective weapon.

THREE FORMS OF PRIDE
1. VANITY– preoccupied with appearances.
2. CONCEIT – exaggerated opinion of one’s virtues and accomplishments.
3. ARROGANCE – a feeling of superiority that shows itself in a lofty, overbearing manner.

PRIDE ROBS US OF LEARNING WISDOM.
Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 11:2 NLT
• We can become too prideful to learn from others.
• Disgrace in this context is a picture of foolishness.

Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success. Proverbs 15:22 NLT

Paul’s charge to Timothy…
14 But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. 15 You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. 2 Timothy 3:14-17 NLT

• God’s Word teaches us what is true.
• God’s Word reveals what is wrong.
• God’s Word prepares us.

PRIDE ROBS US OF HONOR.
5 In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. 7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. 1 Peter 5:5-7 NLT

• If we don’t learn to submit to authority, we won’t learn to submit to God.
• You will never respect authority unless you are willing to submit to authority.

PRIDE ROBS US OF A RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.
The Lord detests the proud; they will surely be punished. Proverbs 16:5 NLT
…“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5b NLT
The Lord tears down the house of the proud, but he protects the property of widows. Proverbs 15:25 NLT

GOD BLESSES HUMILITY.
You rescue the humble, but you humiliate the proud. Psalm 18:27 NLT
He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them his way. Psalm 25:9 NLT
• In humility, we open our hearts to the guidance that God seeks to provide us with.
• It takes surrender to truly listen and be open to God’s prompting.

Next steps for me today…
• Humbly surrender everything to Jesus right now.
• Crucify pride by nailing it to the Cross of Christ
