Community Matters

Life is better when it is lived in community with others.

42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity – 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47 NLT

● Living in community requires me to be content with who I am and what I have.

There is no way to win when you compare yourself to someone else.

12 I know both how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content – whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. 13 I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:12-13 (CSB)

The easiest way to battle envy is to celebrate the blessings of others.

● Living in community requires me to experience real intimacy.

34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples. John 13:34-35 NLT

One of the most powerful things you can do is to be present where you are, with people who are with you.

24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25 NLT

● Living in community requires me to seek the best for others.

Selfishness left unchecked will keep you from making a difference in the lives of others.

All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. Acts 4:32 NLT

Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others. 1 Corinthians 10:24 NLT

To say you care and do nothing means that you do not care at all.

● Living in community leads me to live a life of worship

We worship whatever we give top priority in our life.

You must not have any other god but me. Exodus 20:3 NLT

On the first day of the week, we gathered with the local believers to share in the Lord’s Supper. Paul was preaching to them, and since he was leaving the next day, he kept talking until midnight. Acts 20:7

Jesus is the only one strong enough to handle the weight of our worship.

And all who believed were together and had all things in common. Acts 2:44 (ESV)

For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. Psalm 107:9 (ESV)

Next Steps:

● Choose today to commit my life to Jesus
● Choose to become a part of His community at Journey.
● Choose to be thankful for what I have and commit to sharing it with others.
