INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED VII

We have a responsibility to teach our children how to have committed marriages that honor God and one another.

You must not commit adultery. Exodus 20:14 NLT

7 Don’t be misled – you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. 8 Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. 9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Galatians 6:7-9 NLT

What it says in a nutshell is that all sexual involvement outside of marriage whether premarital or extramarital sex, is a grievous sin against Almighty God.

3 Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. 5 And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:3-5 NLT

So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires… Colossians 3:5 NLT

1 Finally, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, as we have taught you. You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more. 2 For you remember what we taught you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3 God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. 4 Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor – 5 not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways. 6 Never harm or cheat a fellow believer in this matter by violating his wife, for the Lord avenges all such sins, as we have solemnly warned you before. 7 God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives. 8 Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you. 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 NLT

The problem we see in today’s culture is that we don’t see either as a grievous sin.
● It’s normal – It’s what they are all doing.
● It’s promoted – It’s on our TV’s, our radio or phones.
● It’s expected – That’s the world we live in now.
● It’s accepted – We’ve stopped speaking out and teaching truth.

TO ADULTERATE MEANS TO MAKE IMPURE.
● A sin against yourself.
18 Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. 19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 NLT

● A sin against your home.
Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. Hebrews 13:4 NIV

● A sin against the church.
Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16 NLT

GOD’S PLAN FOR MARRIAGE
21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. 23 “At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’” 24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Genesis 2:21-24 NLT

● The Priority of Marriage – The permanent union of marriage takes precedence over the temporary task of child rearing.
● The Permanence of Marriage – Mark 10:8-9 Jesus said, “‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, 8 and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, 9 let no one split apart what God has joined together.”
● The Power of Marriage – Marriage and divorce influence every aspect of our lives – emotional stability, physical health and even outlook on life.

Next Steps for me today…
● I will confess my sins and ask God to forgive me.
● I will honor the covenant of marriage.
● I will take divorce off the table in my marriage.
● I will teach my children God’s plan for marriage by word and example.
